In collaboration with Hanneke Honigh and Brenda Kout
In today’s contemporary art landscape, the interaction between art and technology is essential- especially when exploring how animal characteristics can inspire creative work. This research highlights artists who combine these elements, focusing on themes such as movement, color, skin, senses, and production within the broader concept of Animal & Technology.
Inspiration and innovation
As part of the Art & Tech program at ArtEZ, this project explored the theme Tradition & Innovation, with a focus on how technical processes intersect with contemporary art. Inspiration was drawn from artists such as Studio Drift and Zoro Feigl, particularly their work with interactive installations.
Following research into subthemes like old & new, reuse, and the relationship between art and technology, the focus was narrowed to Animal & Technology. Animals serve as a powerful source of inspiration across both art and science.
To provide clarity and structure, five core categories were defined:
- Animal & Tech: Skin
- Animal & Tech: Movement
- Animal & Tech: Color
- Animal & Tech: Senses
- Animal & Tech: Production
For each category, five relevant artworks were selected. The research included work by artists such as Iris van Herpen, Theo Jansen, and Tomás Saraceno- each offering a unique perspective on nature, innovation, and technology.
